School programs

We’ve had the privilege of working with a variety of schools throughout Toledo and the surrounding areas, engaging students from elementary to high school to universities. Our programs foster camaraderie among students while encouraging active participation from everyone and even the teachers if they desire. By integrating music and movement, we create an inclusive environment where everyone can connect and grow together.

Alternative programs

We proudly offer programs tailored to diverse needs, including special needs children, hospital programs, retirement communities, private education, and more. Our team works closely with each group to provide a personalized experience that fosters connection, healing, and growth through music and movement.

Drum & Dance classes

African Drum Classes

Discover the rhythm of African drumming with our expert-led classes. We offer lessons on the West African djembe and dun duns, teaching authentic music and techniques. Learn to play these unique instruments from our master drummer, Emmanuel Djo Bi, and immerse yourself in the rich traditions of African drumming.

African Dance

Whether you’re looking to stay in shape or connect with your body in a more natural way, our classes offer an opportunity to learn authentic steps and embrace the rhythm of African dance. Experience the vibrant movements of West African dance with MamaDjo, who brings over 28 years of expertise.

Drum Circles

Our Drum Circles create a space for the community to come together, where everyone is heard and shares in the experience. We incorporate hand pans, balafons, and lighter instruments to offer a relaxed atmosphere that helps raise and heal vibrations through music and rhythm.

Drum Jam

After taking a drum class, join us for a Drum Jam, where you can practice the rhythms you’ve learned with master drummer Emmanuel Djo Bi. It’s the perfect way to refine your skills and deepen your connection to the music.

Performances

Drum and Dance

Our high-energy performances range from 30 to 90 minutes and are designed to uplift and engage the audience. With vibrant drumming and dynamic dance, we create an atmosphere that raises the vibration, leaving people out of their seats, dancing, and singing along.

Zaouli Mask Dance

These performances are priced higher due to their rarity, as there are only two Zaouli dancers in the USA. We require 2-4 weeks’ notice for bookings, but the experience is well worth the cost. It is believed that witnessing a Zaouli dancer brings a year of prosperity, a blessing sought after by West African presidents and many others. This unique, cultural performance is truly a special opportunity.

Rites of Passage

.Kimberly aka MamaDjo, an ordained minister since 2003 with a degree in Cultural Anthropology, brings both experience and knowledge to organizing rites of passage for both females and males entering adulthood. These personalized rituals are arranged in collaboration with parents, incorporating music and cultural practices grounded in empirical evidence. We guide you through a meaningful ceremony that honors tradition and supports the transition into adulthood.

About Us

High Energy – Authentic music –

The Djobi Ensemble plays original and authentic West African music, bringing high-energy performances that captivate audiences and get them on their feet with song and dance. Known for elevating drumming in the U.S., they feature traditional rhythms from Emmanuel’s village in the Ivory Coast, as well as original compositions by Kimberly Djo Bi.
Their performances include African mask dances like Zaouli and Boloye, accompanied by djembes, dun duns, balafons, and other traditional instruments. Emmanuel Djo Bi, a native of the Ivory Coast, was the lead drummer of the national orchestra before bringing his talents to the U.S. Kimberly Djo Bi, with over 27 years of experience, has traveled extensively from Africa, Central America and the U.S., learning and creating original music and choreography.
Together, their love for music resonates through every performance. Since 2018, Djobi Ensemble has headlined events such as Starwood, Community Unity, the Michigan Renaissance Festival, Oakland University, Washington Local Schools, and many more. Their studio is based in Toledo, Ohio.
